With an internationally leading record over the last four decades in pure and applied research, we combine experimental and computational modelling studies at a fundamental level.

Focusing on Combustion, Heat and Mass Transfer and Fluid Flow, the division has well equipped laboratories hosting a wide range of laser sources and detectors, as well as extensive facilities for computational flow modelling methods (CFD).

Research focus areas

  • Direct Numerical Simulation is applied in fundamental studies of transition from laminar to turbulent flow and to heat transfer in two-phase flows.
  • Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is being applied to inert mixing problems, combusting flows and to multi-phase problems including atomisation.
  • Optical instrumentation, including both single point techniques and planar measurements, for combustion and two-phase flows applied to both fundamental studies and to Diesel, Otto and so-called HCCI cycle engines as well as to gas turbine combustors and model coal burners.
  • Unsteady fluid mechanics, instrumentation development and computational methods for applied to turbochargers in recognition of their pulsating flow environment.

Research groups

  • The Aimee Morgans lab, led by Professor Aimee Morgans, is specialised in thermoacoustic instabilities and aerodynamic drag of vehicles.
  • The Hazelab group, led by Professor Guillermo Rein, studies heat transfer, combustion and fire science. The purpose of its work is to reduce the worldwide burden of accidental fires and protect people, their property, and the environment.
  • The Turbo group, led by Professor Ricardo Martinez-Botas, provides world class expertise in turbocharging and exhaust gas energy recovery.
